Hypnotic responding might be due to attenuated frontal lobe functioning after the hypnotic induction. Little is known about whether personality traits linked with frontal functioning are associated with responsiveness to hypnotic suggestions. We assessed whether hypnotic suggestibility is related to the traits of self-control and impulsivity in 154 participants who completed the Brief Self-Control Scale, the Self-Regulation Scale, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale , and the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility . BIS-11 non-planning impulsivity correlated positively with HGSHS:A . Furthermore, (...)

Philosophic Classics: From Plato to Derrida.Forrest E. Baird & Walter Arnold Kaufmann - 2000 - Routledge.
This anthology of readings in the survey of Western philosophy--from the Ancient Greeks to the 20th Century--is designed to be accessible to today's readers. Striking a balance between major and minor figures, it features the best available translations of texts--complete works or complete selections of works-- which are both central to each philosopher's thought and are widely accepted as part of the canon. The selections are readable and accessible, while still being faithful to the original. Includes Introductions to each historical (...)

  18. Helping Hand v. Greedy Hand Bribery.Robert W. McGee & Walter E. Block - unknown
At the outset, and for virtually all people, bribery appears to be a crime per se. That is, there are no exceptions. You bribe someone or accept a bribe from another person, you are a criminal. Our claim, in sharp contrast, is that matters are quite a bit more complicated than that. Let us see, gentle reader, if we can bribe you into reading this material with an open mind on the basis of this hopefully interesting and challenging introduction to (...)

Centers and peripheries: The development of British physiology, 1870?1914.Stella V. F. Butler - 1988 - Journal of the History of Biology 21 (3):473-500.
By 1910 the Cambridge University physiology department had become the kernel of British physiology. Between 1909 and 1914 an astonishing number of young and talented scientists passed through the laboratory. The University College department was also a stimulating place of study under the dynamic leadership of Ernest Starling.I have argued that the reasons for this metropolitan axis within British physiology lie with the social structure of late-Victorian and Edwardian higher education. Cambridge, Oxford, and University College London were national institutions attracting (...)

    Metafisica e revelazione nella filosofia positiva di Schelling. [REVIEW]J. V. M. - 1968 - Review of Metaphysics 21 (4):747-747.
It becomes increasingly difficult to keep up with studies of Schelling, or more generally of the history of German Idealism, without being conversant with the rapidly growing Italian literature in this field. This book appears twenty-five years after that of Horst Furrmans, and ten years after that of Walter Schulz—the two major studies to date of Schelling's later philosophy. Although Bausola's study does not display the depth and extent of scholarly penetration to be found in Furrmans or Schulz, neither (...)

    Art and Cognition.E. L. Feinberg - 1977 - Russian Studies in Philosophy 15 (4):62-91.
Looked at in one way, the existence of art continues to be an unsolved puzzle. The need for science as an irreplaceable technique for acquiring knowledge about the objective world is hardly subject to doubt. But as concerns art, which for thousands of years has absorbed enormous material and human resources and the most precious creative forces, there is still no equally clear-cut determination of why it is necessary and irreplaceable. How much richer society could become materially if there were (...)

Oxford, UK: Oxford University Press UK.
The essays in Part III of the book, on liberal constraints and traditionalist education, argue for a more regulatory conception of liberal education and emphasize the need for some controls over cultural and religious educational authority. Walter Feinberg’s essay, on religious education in liberal–democratic societies in relation to the question of accountability and autonomy, takes up the issue of educational constraints with respect to religious schools in such societies. While he allows that religious education need not be inconsistent (...)

What is a Public Education and Why We Need It: A Philosophical Inquiry Into Self-Development, Cultural Commitment, and Public Engagement.Walter Feinberg - 2016 - Lexington Books.
This book brings the idea of a public—defined in part as the quality of communication among strangers—back into focus. The benefits of doing this are many, but perhaps the most important are to adjust our understanding of what is good teaching and to widen our understanding of what counts as central to the educational process.

This essay addresses the question: given the flattening out of the cultural hierarchy that was the vestige of colonialism and nation-building, is there anything that might be uniquely common about the common school in this postmodern age? By ‘uniquely common’ I do not mean those subjects that all schools might teach, such as reading or arithmetic. Nor do I mean just subjects that might serve a larger public purpose, but that might be taught in either publicly supported or privately supported (...)
